The term „Industrial Internet“ (in Germany Industrie 4.0) stands for the fourth industrial revolution, which is currently happening: The fully automated Smart Factory

All factory entities are networked and constantly communicate:

  • Products
  • and more ...

Intelligent and automated communication contributes to plan and execute process steps with the goal to produce highly individualized products "on demand". Digitization has already progressed relevantly in Automotive, specifically in modern cars; similarly the networking and intelligent control will be reality in many modern factories of all industries.

This requires a relevant changes in production processes and the management of the enterprise, and defines complex challenges to existing corporations.

Internet of Things (IoT)

The platform technologies for the Industrial Internet are overall mostly already existing: Advanced Sensoric and technology of Embedded Systems have reached a high level of maturity and is constantly enhanced towards generic "Cyber Physical Systems (CPS)". The "Internet of Things" is available for intelligent networking and Machine to Machine (M2M) communication.

The remaining challenge in is the intelligent planning and control of these modern factories and fabrication systems. It appears, the topic "management and control" of the Industrial Internet so far is not getting a sufficient level of attention.

Automated Management in the IoT

By no means it is sufficient that among Industrial Internet in a modern factory all relevant actors, components and systems can communicate with each other efficiently and without delay. With that not at all defined what decisions are to be taken in an intelligent process or production flow.

Based on global and local goal setting for the factory or factory unit, a vastly automated control shall manage the factory. Constant information flow requires fully dynamic and real time control systems. Only true optimization enables highest efficiency while keeping the flexibility that market environment demands.

A system, that can deliver this, is far more demanding that the existing process planning systems; it leads to the challenges and questions of combinatorial mathematical optimization.
